Code Enforcement Officer

Botetourt County (pronounced Bot-ah-tot), is one of Virginia’s most scenic and historically significant County. Nestled just north of Roanoke, Virginia, Botetourt County offers American history blended with nature and modern attractions.  When it was first established, the County extended all the way to the Mississippi River, covering parts of seven present-day states. Botetourt offers a slice of Americana, with charming small towns, traditions, and southern hospitality of life in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Botetourt County is recruiting for the position of Code Enforcement Officer to join our Department of Community Development.  This is a newly created, full-time position with an excellent benefits package, including state retirement.

Recently, Botetourt has been involved in a host of projects and exciting announcements which are furthering the Botetourt 2040 vision to “Honor our History, Enjoy the Present and Shape the Future.”  The reconstruction of Interstate 81’s Exit 150 Access Management Project and the announced locations of a new auto parts manufacturing facility, a major craft brewery, and the Virginia Community College Shared Services Center all continue to facilitate the need for managing day-to-day zoning activities as well as sound comprehensive and long-range planning.

The selected candidate will have responsibility for performing varied professional assignments in the field of zoning and code enforcement.  Success in this position requires the ability to effectively interact with a diverse community, apply complex code requirements to varied situations, navigate conflict and seeks positive solutions. An ideal candidate would be articulate, resourceful, patient and detail oriented.

Areas of Focus:

  • Zoning Complaints
  • Site Plans
  • Assist with the zoning ordinance amendment updates

Areas of Responsibility:

    • Provides technical assistance and information to the public in the administration of the zoning ordinance
    • Coordinates efforts with other departments and agencies
    • Investigates violations of zoning regulations and ordinances, including site visits
    • Prepares violations, notices and other related correspondence
    • Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files, and records
    • Provides assistance to the County Attorney related to the prosecution of code enforcement cases
    • Attend Board of Zoning Appeals, County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meetings

Education and Experience:

    • High School graduate and two (2) years experience in planning, zoning, code enforcement, land use regulations, including considerable public contact, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform job duti
    • VAZO CZO or equivalent certification preferred

Starting salary: $32,772 - $51,244

    • Identifies community problems, issues and opportunities
    • Evaluates adequacy of community facilities in meeting current and projected needs
    • Recommends priorities, schedules and funding sources to implement public improvements plan
    • Interprets and applies applicable state and county codes, ordinances and regulations.
    • Attend Board of Zoning Appeals, County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meetings

Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in urban and/or regional planning or a closely related field; Master’s degree preferred
    • One (1) year professional planning work experience in municipal or county government; three (3) to five (5) years’ experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform job duties
    • AICP Certification preferred

Starting salary: $39,446 - $47,500

Cataloger (Library)

Botetourt County Library is currently seeking a full-time employee to fill the position of Library Cataloger. Duties for this position include but are not limited to creating original MARC records and copy cataloging using OCLC and SirsiDynix Symphony, providing direction and assistance to processing staff in performing copy cataloging activities and other issues related to technical services, working collaboratively with library partners to keep cataloging practices standardized, preparing reports for weeding and collection development, and providing public assistance at the circulation desk as required. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Position requires an MLS Degree from an American Library Association accredited program; two or more years of cataloging experience preferred.

Salary negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.

Botetourt County Employment Application


Planning and Zoning Intern - Temporary, seasonal

Botetourt County is seeking an intern to prepare and combine data from various systems into a database that will be utilized to track land use actions in a new software system (Harris Innoprise).

The responsibilities would include data management and accuracy review. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and understand zoning and land use planning processes and will be able to identify and execute action steps to convert data from Access to a database and shapefile capable to be maintained in ESRI GIS software. Knowledge of spatial relationships between data and parcel data is required, ability to understand basic web-based programming and formulas is preferred.  

This implementation project involves the combination of data from Proval, a real estate valuation program, GIS, EGTS Integrity a Real-estate Tax Software,  as well as thorough knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel.

Starting rate of pay is $12 per hour

Recreation Maintenance Worker - Part-time, seasonal

Botetourt County is accepting applications to fill two part-time seasonal maintenance worker positions in the Parks and Recreation Department.  Preferred qualifica­tions in­clude experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance such as mowing, trimming, pruning, raking, shoveling and the operation of tools and equipment needed to perform these duties including riding and push mowers, weed-trimmers and hand tools.  This position will primarily work Mon-Fri 7:00am to 3:30pm, up to 24 hrs per week.  Some periodic evening or weekend duty may be required. Volunteering

  • Recreation

The Recreation Department is continually looking for dedicated volunteers to support its various programs and activities. The County utilizes volunteers to support parks and playing fields, coach youth sports teams, and promote its many programs. Additionally, the County works collectively with seven booster clubs in the area made up entirely of volunteers, which support and organize local youth sports leagues.
